Global Privacy Assembly

The Global Privacy Assembly is the most important world forum for exchange of knowledge, experience and ideas in the field of personal data protection and privacy. It was held for the first time in 1979 as the International Conference of Data Protection and Privacy Commissioners. For more than four decades, it has functioned as a platform for meeting leaders in the field of personal data protection. This is achieved through the joint efforts of organizations from 6 continents - a total of one hundred and ten accredited members and sixteen observers from across the globe.

The Mission of the Global Privacy Assembly is:

- To be an outstanding global forum for privacy and data protection authorities.
- To disseminate knowledge, and provide practical assistance, to help authorities more effectively to perform their mandates.
- To provide leadership at international level in data protection and privacy.
- To connect and support efforts at domestic and regional level, and in other international forums, to enable authorities better to protect and promote privacy and data protection.

The Assembly has a 5 member governance body - the Executive Committee, comprised of a Chair, two members, and the hosts of the previous and next conferences.

For its 40-year history, for the first time the Forum was organized jointly by an European institution and a national data protection authority in 2018.This provided an opportunity for the Bulgarian Commission for Personal Data Protection and the European Supervisory Authority to emphasize the leading role of the European Union in shaping policies and means of personal data protection and access to information in the year of the beginning of implementation of the General Data Protection Regulation.
