The last meeting of the Europol Joint Supervisory Body was held on 31 May 2022. For the past four years, said Body has pursued its main objective of reviewing Europol`s activities in order to guarantee the rights of individuals with regard to the storage, processing and use of their personal data and to monitor the admissibility of the transfers of data that has been received from Europol.
The supervision regarding data protection in Europol ensures that the right balance between data protection rights and the key public interest in security is found. An essential aspect of this supervision is the cooperation of the European Data Protection Supervisor with the national supervisory authorities, in particular within the Europol Cooperation Council. The Council acts as a forum with advisory functions where supervisory authorities discuss general issues, develop guidelines and summarize good practices.
Following the publication and entry into force of the amendments to the European legal framework on Europol at the end of June 2022, coordinated supervision will be carried out by the Coordinated Supervision Committee.
