Every individual has the right to access their personal data processed in the information registers of the Ministry of Interior or in SIS. The individual shall submit an application for access directly to the national SIRENE Bureau, established as a unit at the Directorate of International Operational Cooperation of the Ministry of Interior. Such a request may also be submitted to the Commission for Personal Data Protection (CPDP), which will forward it to the Ministry of Interior.
The request may be submitted in person, on paper (by post) and/or in electronic format, signed with a qualified electronic signature by the data subject, by a lawyer with a power of attorney or a legal guardian, if necessary. Data subjects may be represented by an appointed lawyer or legal guardian.
The Minister of Interior is obliged to decide within 14 days of receipt of the request for access. A copy of the processed personal data of the individual may be provided on paper upon request. Submitting a request for access to data in SIS is free of charge. The minimum personal data provided by the applicant are: name, surname, date of birth, nationality, gender, citizenship and information on the validity of the passport. For the purposes of an application, individuals submit the following documents:
proof of identity of the applicant – a legible copy of an ID card or passport;
proof of a power of attorney issued – where necessary – a notarized power of attorney (when authorizing representation by a third party).
The languages that can be used when submitting the application are Bulgarian and English. The language in which the applicant is answered, if he/she is not a Bulgarian citizen, is English.
