On 28 January 2023, the Commission for Personal Data Protection celebrates the Data Protection Day for the 17th time. Originally European, the Data Protection Day is now celebrated worldwide, where it is known as Privacy Day.
The Data Protection Day was established to fulfil the need for reconciliation of core values, such as the right to privacy and the free movement of data. Moreover, emphasis is put on the significance of the adequate data protection, both in the private and professional lives of the data subjects, as well as the education of the public about the challenges of data protection and how to exercise their rights.
The increasingly complex challenges for the privacy protection predetermine the future role, complex tasks and growing responsibilities for CPDP, as well as to all who are part of the personal data protection system.
In 2023 the CPDP marks the Data Protection Day with initiatives whose main goal is to promote awareness and form an understanding of personal data in the digital world and global information exchange. Both on the occasion of the Data Protection Day and for the purposes of raising the awareness of data subjects, the CPDP shares good practices from it’s supervisory activity. Following another tradition, CPDP announces a student essay contest. This year it is organized jointly with the Faculty of Law of Sofia University „St.Kliment Ohridski”. Detailed information about the contest is published on the CPDP’s website – here.
