The issue of personal data protection in Bulgaria received legal protection in 2002, when on 01.01.2002 the Personal Data Protection Act came into force and a few months later, on 23.05.2002 the Commission for Personal Data Protection was institutionalized.
The Chairwoman of the second CPDP staff Veneta Shopova and the members of all three staffs - Krasimir Dimitrov, Stanimir Tsolov, prof. Radi Romanski, Maria Mateva, prof. Vesselin Tselkov, Tsanko Tsolov and Tsvetelin Sofroniev responded to the invitation of the current Chairman of the CPDP Ventsislav Karadjov. The memory of two deceased members was honoured - Ivo Stefanov, Chairman of the first staff, and Evgeny Radev, member of the first staff.
The event on the occasion of the 20th anniversary was held in two parts. The first was intended only for the former and current leadership of the CPDP, and the second was extended to the current administration of the institution. The Chairman of the CPDP, Mr. Ventsislav Karadjov, welcomed all attendees and introduced the Chairwoman of the second staff, Ms. Veneta Shopova, as well as the members of the previous two staff formations. In his speech he pointed out that each CPDP staff formation has made its contribution, accumulating experience, knowledge, continuity and improvement over the years. He stressed that over the past 20 years, the Commission has succeeded in shaping the public consciousness of responsibility towards citizens` personal data and understanding of the right of their protection. Today, the CPDP is not only an established independent supervisory authority that implements the protection of individuals in the processing of their personal data and the related controls, but also a recognisable partner with authority in the European and international context.
With particular satisfaction, Mr Karadjov shared the successes of the CPDP to date, addressed personal praise to individuals in the administration and expressed his satisfaction with the work of the institution and the results achieved.
