The Global Privacy Assembly is the world’s leading forum for the exchange of knowledge, experience and ideas in the field of data protection and privacy. It was first held in 1979 under the name of the International Conference of Data Protection and Privacy Commissioners. For more than four decades, it has served as where platform the leaders in the field of data protection can meet. This is achieved through the combined efforts of organizations from six continents – a total of one hundred and ten accredited members and sixteen observers.
The mission of the Global Privacy Assembly is:
– to be a leading international forum for data protection and privacy authorities;
– to disseminate knowledge and practical experience, to assist authorities in the effective implementation of their mandates;
– to provide leadership in the field of data protection and privacy at the international level;
– to connect and support efforts at local and regional level, as well as in other international forums, and to enable authorities to better protect and promote data protection and privacy.
The Assembly has a five-member governing body – the Executive Committee, which consists of a Chair, two members, as well as the hosts of the previous and next conference.
For the first time in its 40-year history, the Forum was jointly organized by a European institution and a national data protection authority (DPPA) in 2018. This provided an opportunity for the Bulgarian Personal Data Protection Commission and the European Data Protection Board to highlight the leading role of the European Union in shaping policies and tools for the protection of personal data and access to information in the year of the entry into force of the General Data Protection Regulation.
On 20 October 2023 CPDP was elected as a member of the Executive Committee of the Global Privacy Assembly.
