On January 28, 2011 the European Union countries will celebrate the European Data Protection Day for the fifth time. This year marks 30 years of entry into force of the Convention 108/81 of the Council of Europe on January 28, 1981 on the Protection of Individuals with regard to automatic processing of personal data. In this case, the Council of Europe and the European Commission are jointly organizing a conference on "Data Protection (30 years later): from European to International Standards" on January 28, 2011 in Brussels. The Commission for Personal Data Protection of the Republic of Bulgaria will be represented by chairwoman Veneta Shopova.
At national level, the Commission for Personal Data Protection held a seminar entitled "CPDP – European Standards for Data Protection. Bulgaria in Schengen”. Members of the Parliamentary Commission for Internal Security and Public Order, representatives of the Ministry of Interior, the Ombudsman of the Republic of Bulgaria, representatives of the media and public organizations are invited. The European standards for data protection activities and protection of personal data in the context of Bulgaria`s accession to the Schengen area will be the highlights of the seminar. Members of the Commission for Personal Data Protection and directors of the leading departments of the administration will be speaking. A discussion on the topical issues for the protection of personal data is envisaged.
