The European Congress on Data Protection 2014 will be held in Brussels from 18 to 20 November. Organising of the forum is the International Association of Privacy Professionals (IAPP). Congress delegates are representatives of all parties involved in the process of building and ensuring privacy in the modern world – data protection authorities, governmental and non-governmental organisations, representatives of business and academia. The Commission for Personal Data Protection of the Republic of Bulgaria is represented by its President – Mr. Ventsislav Karadjov.
Various aspects of building and achieving privacy in today’s hi-tech and fast growing world will be discussed in the three-day programme. The themes are grouped in several sessions in which privacy will be discussed in various aspects – instruments and strategies for international data exchange and their interoperability, challenges and opportunities of the new technologies, data management and accountability, privacy in using online services and mobile services and devices. The "right to be forgotten" in the information world, the processing of personal data in the context of cloud technologies, the realisation of the principle of "privacy by design", the risks and opportunities for information protection in Big Data will be considered. The impact of privacy principles on the data-driven economy and the effective implementation of data protection requirements in business processes will be discussed. Efficient strategies of setting up a global shared services infrastructure for multinationals will be presented, as well as technical solutions to real-life problems related to privacy. Special attention will be given to children`s personal data and best practices for their protection on the Internet will be shared.
One of the main topics of the Conference will be the European data protection reform. Special attention will be paid to data breaches and breach response under the forthcoming General Data Protection Regulation. Practical recommendations for re-evaluation of data transfer strategies will be provided, and specifically how tensions in data sharing between EU and US can be resolved.
Last but not least, the role of data protection authorities as counselor, supervisor, enforcer, facilitator, and leading element in ensuring the privacy of individuals will be discussed. A closed session for the representatives of the data protection authorities will be held within the Conference.
The European Congress on Data Protection 2014 is the latest international forum discussing one of the most pressing, relevant, and urgent problems of modern life – privacy protection in conditions of exponentially increasing storage and processing of personal data.
