A press release welcoming the decision of the European Court of Justice ruling of 13 May 2014 was issued on 23 May 2014 by the Article 29 Data Protection Working Party created under the provisions of the Directive 95/46/EC on the protection of individuals with regard to the processing of personal data and on the free movement of such data (WP29). The European Court decision concerns the legal status of internet search engines with respect to the processing of personal data through the “search” service, applicability of Directive 95/46/EC to that service, and the web users’ right to directly request from the search engine the deletion of the links to web pages containing information breaching their rights for data protection. An exchange of views and information between EU data protection authorities is starting in order to analyze the consequences of this decision and to create a common approach to its implementation. The first exchange of views between the EU data protection authorities took place at the WP29 plenary meeting of 3-4 June 2014.
