The European Conference of Data Protection Authorities is being held from 18 to 20 May 2015 in the city of Manchester. The organiser and host of the annual event is the UK’s Information Commissioner’s Office, which is the data protection authority of Great Britain. The Commission for Personal Data Protection is represented by its Chairman – Ventsislav Karadjov, and its board-members – Mariya Mateva and prof. Veselin Tselkov.
„Data Protection in Practice” is the theme of this year’s Conference, entitled „Navigating the Digital Future – let’s get practical!”. The focus of the Conference is delivering in practice the individuals’ right of data protection, in the light of the ongoing debate on the European data protection reform.
The panels included are as follows: „Delivering rights for individuals – individuals’ expectations”, „Data protection rights – how organisations can successfully deliver”, „Putting data protection rights at citizens’ fingertips – the challenges for DPAs”, „How to improve cooperation between European DPAs”. Leading experts on data protection will share their experience on what individuals do to engage with the law and what data protection and privacy mean to them. Examples of real and practical tools which organisations (both public and private) could develop to help individuals exercise their rights will be shared. The multitude of challenges which data protection authorities face in the wider changing regulatory and technological landscape will be explored. The delegates will be acquainted with the enforcement powers of the Office of the Information Commissioner, as well as its approach to regulatory action in the UK.
Ventsislav Karadjov, the Vice-Chair of the Article 29 Working Party and the Chairman of the Bulgarian data protection authority will present the views and experience of the Bulgarian supervisory authority in dealing with citizens and their expectations regarding the protection of their personal data.
