On 28 January 2016 the Commission for Personal Data Protection will commemorate the Data Protection Day for the tenth time. On this very date in 1981 the European countries, that share the formulated by the Council of Europe fundamental principles for the protection of human rights, got the opportunity to ratify the Convention №108 for the Protection of Individuals with Regard to Automatic Processing of Personal Data. The Convention is the first international legal act for personal data protection of the individuals, which introduces the legal texts and principles, adopted and put into practice by the EU and the Member-States. The current 2016 is important for the rights of the EU citizens, as new European standards, which will give the citizens the opportunity for a better control over their personal data in the digital world, and, in the same time diminish the bureaucratic influence on the business.
The Commission for Personal Data protection organised an Open Doors Day (11:00 – 12:30) for the Chairperson, the Members of the Board of the Commission for Personal Data Protection and the Secretary General, who will give their expert opinion with regard to privacy matters. At the same time, experts will consult data controllers and citizens.
The following activities, which will be taking place in 2016 or 2017, are going to be announced on 28th January:
– Announcing the annual award for journalism, which will be given to journalists, who have contributed the most for promoting citizens’ right to data protection. The first award will be given on 28thJanuary 2017.
– The launch of a competition for children and students (pictures, essays, poems). The awards will be given on 1 June 2016, on the occasion of the 14th anniversary of the establishment of the Commission for Personal Data Protection and the International Children’s Day.
