At a meeting held on 14 June 2017 in Brussels, the Eurodac Supervision Coordination Group elected Mariya Mateva, a member of the Commission for Personal Data Protection, as its Vice-Chair. The current Chair was re-elected for a second term.
Eurodac is an automated European Union system for fingerprint identification of refugees, asylum-seekers and illegal immigrants in the EU. The objective of the system is to accelerate the identification of asylum seekers, to facilitate the choice of host Member State and to avoid the possibility of multiple asylum applications being lodged in different Member States by the same applicant.
The Eurodac Supervision Coordination Group operates under the authority of the European Data Protection Supervisor and is a platform within which the data protection authorities responsible for Eurodac`s oversight cooperate to ensure joint control. The Coordination Group makes recommendations for common solutions to existing problems and addresses difficulties in the interpretation and application of the Eurodac Regulation. It examines the problems that arise when using the system, as well as those encountered by supervisors when conducting inspections.
The coordination group is composed of two representatives from each Member State, proposed by the national independent data protection authorities. The management is provided by a chairman and a vice-chair.
