With regard to the upcoming application date of the General Data Protection Regulation (Regulation 2016/679) as of 25 May 2018, the Commission informs that so far it has conducted series of events and meetings with controllers and stakeholders, in which various representatives of the public and private sectors participated. Because of the high interest shown by controllers to the new data protection rules and standards which will apply after the aforementioned date, the Commission decided to widen its awareness raising campaign to society at large. The aim of the campaign is to give basic clarifications on the Regulation’s philosophy, its main definitions, all new obligations on controllers, data subjects’ rights, and the data protection officer functions and requirements respectively. The awareness raising campaign will keep on going even after 25 May 2018, based on the social need of it.
Due to the limited administrative resource, the Commission will focus its awareness raising campaign endeavors in a sector principle to representative organizations of controllers.
Given the amount of queries entering CPDP, which are very specific and affect the necessities of separate controllers, and not the general application of the Regulation, CPDP would like to pay attention to the Communication of the European Commission to the European Parliament and the European Council from 24.01.2018 (COM(2018) 43 final) and precisely “controllers and processors should not expect the data protection authorities to present them with special, individual legal statements, which only jurists or data protection officers can provide.”
