On 23 May 2022, the Commission for Personal Data Protection celebrates the 20th anniversary of its establishment, as well as the beginning of personal data protection in Bulgaria.
During these 20 years, the CPDP has achieved a lot. We started from scratch, worked, and built the institution, and each member of the Commission throughout the years contributed to its recognizability and authority. Over the past years, we have managed to form a responsibility to the personal data of citizens and an understanding of the right to their protection in the public consciousness.
The challenges were different through different periods but the decisions and taken actions were adequate, sustainable and systematic, as the common goal has always been the interests of Bulgarian society and European values. We exchanged experience and gained knowledge and understanding of this flexible and complex matter – personal data in the world of mutual digital solutions and global information exchange.
In recent years, the CPDP has established itself as a data protection body with international authority – both in terms of the implementation of its members in European formats for supervision and cooperation, and in working with other supranational institutions in the field of privacy.
Life poses new, increasingly complex challenges to protecting people`s privacy, especially in the context of the digital world and new technology. This predetermines the future role, complex tasks and growing responsibilities that the institutions in the field of privacy will have to face.
Let`s celebrate this anniversary, pay tribute to what we have achieved and share our views on the future of the Commission for Personal Data Protection, which has been working tirelessly for 20 years in the interest of human rights.
