On 12th and 13th March 2009 in Sofia was held the 45th Meeting of the International Working Group on Data Protection in Telecommunications. In the meeting participated representatives of data protection authorities from all regions in the world, international organizations, research workers and experts. The forum was held by Alexander Dix – the chairman of the International Group International Working Group on Data Protection in Telecommunications. There were discussed a lot of actual themes from the sphere of telecommunications – privacy issues in social networks and in the law in the global network, checking the contents of e-mails, storage the content of SMS messages for law enforcement purposes and so on. A Charter of Digital Data protection and Freedom of Information was discussed. The Charter was proposed by Peter Schaar, the Federal Commissioner for Data Protection and Freedom of Information, Germany.
One of the documents, the Working Group accepted during the conference two days in the Bulgarian capital is “The Sofia’s memorandum”. It is a report containing important recommendations for personal data protection of the drivers in the e-systems for gathering the road taxes.
A lively debates provoked the presentations of Daniel Weitzner for the Massachusetts Institute of Technology – “The privacy-aware web” and of Ilias Chantsos from the Symantec Inc. – “Security Information Systems and Networks and Privacy”.
