On April 15 2014 the 42nd National Assembly elected the new Commission for Personal Data Protection. Ventsislav Kirilov Karadjov has been elected as president and Tzanko Valkov Tzolov, Tsvetelin Nikolov Sofroniev, Mariya Georgieva Mateva and Veselin Tsenov Tselkov as members.
Commission members and the President are elected by the National Assembly at the proposal of the Council of Ministers for a period of five years. The newly elected members of the Bulgarian supervisory authority for data protection ensure continuity with new leadership. Ventsislav Karadjov is a lawyer with extensive experience in working with Bulgarian and foreign institutions. Tzanko Tzolov is an IT specialist with experience in the field of information technology and the outgoing head of the "Registry and Archive" department in CPDP. Tsvetelin Sofroniev is a lawyer and outgoing CPDP Secretary General. Mariya Mateva and prof. Veselin Tselkov are entering into a second mandate as members of the Commission.
CPDP is the national authority that enforces standards and monitors compliance of the rules relating to the processing of personal data. It is the institution that internationally represents Bulgaria in the development of the trends and policies for the protection of personal data. High public expectations for the activities of the Commission determine its importance in the context of growing privacy challenges.
